The Sluice is the connection to the Hamlet, which exists to the east and shows that the Swine are continuing to spread outwards. The foetor was where residents gave in to their base instincts as the world collapsed around them. The Sprawl was the epicenter of destruction and the effort to wipe away the knowledge of the old world. The biomes themselves are more closely connected with the events the Tangle was where armies tried to stop the cultists but got zombified by corruption and apathy. They aren't necessarily a bunch of whiners they are a group of traumatized individuals coping with the end of the world in some weird hellscape. Unlike the first game their actual backgrounds are actually fleshed out with thematic missions that feature unique skins. In the end only the heroes that overcame the loathing would be strong enough to face the darkest dungeon nd be hireable at the stagecoach in the hamlet. I also feel like the academic could just be the heir(he hasnt had any personal development, but ive always assumed he was only minimally better than the ancestor, cuz he also sends tons of strangers to their death with the promise of gold) Lorewise, nothing in the world should compare to the difficulty and malice in the darkest dungeon, so this seems like a perfect opportunity to explain the easier mechanics and fights on the stagecoach which should ultimately lead to the hamlet. Giving backstories to the companions having them on the stagecoach with no real destination (okay 'the mountain', but besides the locale i see no resemble se to hp lovecrafts mountains of madness). I think i posted this before, but dd2 would work perfectly as a prequel.
